When we start to set goals and we are striving to make change. We often look at changing our actions and behaviours in order to get what we want.

Our belief, is that if we start doing something different, taking new action or making different decisions that we will begin to achieve what we set out to do.

But what if I told you that this approach is completely the wrong way at looking at achieving goals?

The power of mindset coaching

Within ActionCoach we teach our business coaching clients about mastering our internal environment, through The Identity Iceberg principle and the power of a positive mindset.

As businesses grow or hit difficult times, business owners and managers often spiral into panic mode and just start ‘doing’.  With more actions, more (poor) decisions and lack of consistent behaviour – they ultimately end up feeling overwhelmed, stressed and in more of a difficult situation than before. This is because they have lost control, lost sight of who they are and what their beliefs and values are.

Identity Iceberg

Think of an iceberg.  The bulk of it is under the water where you don’t see it – it is only a small part above the water that you see.

We are the same. Most of who we are is made up of our identity, beliefs, values and skills. If any of these areas are not strong enough – what do you think it does to on the top of the water?

Will you be making good decisions and taking the right action?  It is unlikely.

This is what the Identity Iceberg looks like – the core of who we are, sits below the line. These can be the triggers for disruption and challenges. We all find ourselves at times having out beliefs and values to be challenged…

Identity

What does it mean?

At the very bottom is our identity; this is how we view ourselves, which can often be negative. It is the concept of our own self – who do we see ourselves as? Someone who BECOMES who they need or just DOES what the have to.

A value is what we deem important whereas a belief is something that you hold to be true. We must make sure that we are developing positive beliefs about ourselves instead of any self-doubting or self-limiting beliefs which will affect the actions and decisions we make.

We only do something if we value it and value the result of it. And we will only change our beliefs about something if we value it.

It is our skills that drive our behaviour because if we don’t know how to do something – we won’t. BUT, if we work on our belief that we can – we will learn the new skills which will improve our action, decisions and behaviour.

It is the whole bottom part of the iceberg develops a positive mindset of what do we need to BE in order to DO which will result in us HAVING what we want.  Instead of the mindset of DO = HAVE.

So before you start to take action or make another decision – look at what is at the core and under the surface – are you working on BEING who you need to be, in order to do the DO.
